Flotilla Commander's Message

From the Commander

I want to thank each member for your support during the last year.  I appreciate your dedication and hours of work toward making our flotilla the best.

My congratulations go out to our new Commander--Jim Sleichert, and our new Vice Commander--Ed Stebner.  I know each will perform their duties well.

Each of the officers who stayed the course and worked hard to achieve their goals made me proud to be associated with you and the job you have done.  Thank you for your service.

I will continue to work toward the common goals our flotilla sets for its members and will assist in any way I can as officer or contributing member.

Thanks for a great year.

Juan Hernandez
Flotilla Commander

FROM THE VICE FLOTILLA COMMANDER DESK:

Well, another year is almost over, and I’m looking forward to the New Year.  The Change of Watch party went flawlessly and I thought the food was good.  This was the first year we tried an afternoon party and I want to get feedback from the members and see if they like an afternoon or dinner party.  Nothing is written in stone and we will do whatever the majority of member’s request. If you attended the Change of Watch please e-mail me at jterhic@comcast and let me know how you felt about the Change of Watch luncheon.

Staff Officers positions are nearly all filled and I have only a few left.  We have a few members taking up the slack and accepting a position.  I hope to swear in the few staff officers that could not make the Change of Watch at our next regular meeting.  Do not forget the next regular meeting is 01December 09 and I hope everyone will attend.

On-the-water training is gearing down for the year, but we still have a few days scheduled-and a luncheon cruise for all crew, coxswains and trainees.   I hope starting in the New Year we will concentrate on training all our new members that want to be qualified crew and update old crew members that have gotten rusty. The training sites seem to be working out well, although nothing can replace the moorings that we lost to the county.  The county has done absolutely nothing with the property, except let the weeds grow.

I like to thank everyone that voted for me as Flotilla Commander and I will do my best to have a great year for our flotilla.  We have lost some members from transfers, disenrollment and also retirement.  Fortunately we picked up new members and they all seem very dedicated to help our flotilla.

I hope some of the new members become interested in vessel safety checks and can give our star examiner, Patrick Wheeler, some much needed help.  Well, that is about all I have to say, except I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

 Jim Sleichert
Vice Commander

I WILL ORDER ODU SEW-ON INSIGNIA ON 12/9/09

In the August/September newsletter I provided information about the Coast Guard’s change for sew-on collar insignia for elected/appointed Auxiliary officers.  By December 31, 2010, Auxiliary officers must replace their blue or red "A" sew-on insignia with black "A" sew-on insignia.

A few flotilla members have already asked about ordering the new insignia so I will be placing an order for the black "A" sew-on insignia on Wednesday, December 9. The cost will be approximately $3.00, depending on the number ordered.

In addition, I will order any other sew-on insignia that you may need.

I will be at the Flotilla meeting on December 1 to take orders (and your payment) but you can also contact me via email (rothpdm@yahoo.com) or telephone (941-493-2045).

An operations meeting was held prior to the November Flotilla meeting.  A number of items were discussed concerning coxswain/boat owner requirements and appropriate ODU dress.

The chart above provides information necessary for boat owners who wish to pay their crew for meals in lieu of providing a meal when on patrols.

The boat owner is paid for meals during the hours from 0400--0800, from 1000--1400, and from 1600--2000.  If a boat is on patrol during those hours, it is expected that the owner/coxswain will provide a meal to the crew or pay the crew member for the specific meal(s) cost at the particular time they are on patrol.

Water and snacks should be available on your boat when you have patrols or training.

Patrols are to be done 4 to 6 hours prior to sunset; both St. Petersburg and Station Cortez have requested that we stay on call until at least 30 minutes prior to dark.

The coxswain decides the uniform of the day; all uniforms aboard should be the same.

Judi Bidwick,
FSO-OP

Public Affairs
Al Bidwick, FSO-PA

For the past several weeks, the Herald Tribune has run a weekly announcement on the Community Events page announcing the availability of vessel exams by Flotilla 86 at the Train Station Boat Ramp.  To our surprise, a reporter from the newspaper arrived unannounced to interview Patrick and his crew.  As fate would have it, the men decided to skip that one Saturday to enable them to attend the Change of Watch luncheon.  When Patrick learned that the reporter failed to connect with him, I wrote a letter to the editor who gave me the contact information for the reporter and encouraged us to make arrangements to meet with him at a mutually convenient time.  Patrick met with him and shared information about the auxiliary and our boating safety program.  Hopefully, an article will appear in the near future.

Roman Gzyl volunteered his truck, trailer and boat to enable our flotilla to participate in the annual Christmas Parade in downtown Venice on November 28 and also in the boat parade on the Intracoastal Waterway on December 5.  Roman is busy decorating his boat with colorful lights and holiday displays.  Anyone interested in riding on the boat in one or both parades should contact me as soon as possible.

Nine students graduated recently in the GPS course taught by Al and Judi Bidwick. This course will be taught again in the spring.

We will register students for the upcoming Boating Skills and Seamanship Course on Monday, January 4 at 1800 at the Training Center.

Plans are underway to teach a Personal Watercraft Course in the spring.  It will be designed for teens and young adults.

Our three Public Education students who are braving the Advanced Coastal Navigation Course are working hard and doing well.  This course will go until mid January.

We are always looking for aides to support our classes--please learn our PE schedule and plan to assist whenever you can.
