Flotilla Commander's Message

From the Commander

At our next General Meeting on October 7, we will hold elections for Flotilla Commander and Vice Commander.  Please arrange to attend this important meeting.

Several of you were able to attend the conference in Jacksonville recently where Juan Hernandez gave a presentation on the DSC Tracking System and Rescue 21.  Also presented at this conference was the ICS 210 which is a mandatory workshop for operations.  Casey Jankowski is planning to set this course up for the Division prior to the March 2009 deadline.

For those of you who need the 8-hour TCT, a class is being given in Sarasota at Flotilla 84 on Saturday, October 4 at 0830.  Remember, this class must be taken every five years for those participating in the operations programs.  This is in addition to the 1-hour TCT refresher which is required yearly.

We will participate in the Sun Fiesta Parade again this year.  Both Russ and Patrick will have their vessels in the parade; Russ, with a full crew!

On Tuesday, September 23, there will be an open house at the Training Center for flotilla members, Division and District personnel, and community leaders.   DIRAUX West has officially moved from Nokomis moorings to the building on Harbor Drive.  A renovation of the annex on site will house the Operations, VE, and PA storage that was taken when DIRAUX moved in.

A tour of the annex was given at the last flotilla meeting so members could see the new building, storage closets, and meeting room.

DIRAUX West is now Venice Detachment.  A sign is already erected on site.

Thanks to all the flotilla members and wives who assisted with the clean-up, renovation, painting, tree trimming, mowing, and general help required to make this transition a good one.

Flotilla 86 is still negotiating with Sarasota County regarding the use of Nokomis moorings for training, classes, and radio communications.  A memorandum of understanding for use of the dock and building is being reviewed at the present time.  As soon as a decision is reached, I will share information with you.

Members:  It is imperative that we have the most current contact information on file.  If there have been changes please let us know.  It is still hurricane season and each of you plays a critical role in the success of our calling tree.  We need 100% accountability for our flotilla members.

Judi Bidwick
Flotilla Commander

Fellow members,

We are in the process of releasing the latest version of the DSC Tracking and Navigation system.  I made a presentation of the system at the recent District Conference in Jacksonville and, I am pleased to tell you that it was very well received and endorsed by the members that attended these sessions.

The new version provides:
 *   Ship Information
 *   Multiple formats for Lat/Long & Distance
 *   Range and Bearing: calculates the distance and bearing
      between two waypoints;
 *   Ship Track: connects dots for ship position reports with lines;
 *   Route Plan: plots a route or measures a vessel’s track.
 *   Distance and Heading;
 *   New D&H and Set & Drift;
 *   Multiple Data Sources & Radar Overlay.

The next step is to develop a training program for radio watch standers and a program to support deployment of the system outside our division.

Regards

Juan C. Hernandez

ICE

Apparently this is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone.

ICE - "In Case of Emergency"
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know whom to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign

The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations.

As cell (mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" (In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there were a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE."

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!

Please encourage all members to utilize Auxinfo to find information as passwords for auxdata are being limited.  Auxinfo is updated weekly and has all pertinent information a member would need.

Auxdata is being modified to allow AP members to participate in missions without a boating class being checked off.  However, just like an IQ member in order to receive qualification they will need a boating class.

Please note that member rosters will not be added to auxinfo since our members’ addresses and personal information must be protected.  As anyone can access auxinfo the information would not be secure.

Remember to submit a 7028 form to your FSO-IS to update any personal information that may have changed.  Auxdata records will then be updated by the FSO-IS.

HOW CAN I TELL IF A THUNDERSTORM IS HEADED FOR MY BOAT?

One way is to take a bearing on the storm with a hand-bearing compass. If the bearing does not change, assume the storm is headed in your direction!

You can also count the seconds between the lightning flash and the thunder, then divide by five to determine the storm's distance from the boat in miles. If that distance shrinks with successive flashes, the storm is moving toward you. Keep in mind that flashes often strike at an angle from the storm, so lightning can hit a boat while the storm is still quite distant--the proverbial "bolt out of the blue."

                                           USCGC POINT COUNTESS
When the Point Countess was stationed at the Nokomis moorings, it cruised the Gulf of Mexico off Venice, Florida. The US Coast Guard Station there maintained the cutter until it was sold to the independent country of Georgia and transferred to the Black Sea.

In the recent skirmish between Russia and Georgia, the Point Countess was bombed and  sunk.

Many Auxilarists from Flotilla 86 took part in training and crewing on this cutter. Those of us who were lucky enough to see her appreciate her timeliness and history.
