May, 2005                                                Introduction

Welcome!!

It gives us great pleasure to present to you the online issue of the Fore And Aft Newsletter. It is hoped that you will enjoy the new format. It provides a number of new benefits, the greatest of which is the ability to see larger pictures in color and to be able to print them out for your use.

Other benefits include the ability to use hyperlinks within the text along with a larger number and size of photos. And, of course, the flotilla is able to realize $$$ savings on printing and mailing costs.

Should you wish to print out any page while viewing it in your browser, all you need do is the following:

  • Turn on your printer.
  • You then need to highlight all or part of a page you want printed.
  • In the browser, do not use the icon that shows a printer. Instead, go to the top toolbar to where it says FILE. From the window that comes up, select SELECTION in the PRINT RANGE BOX.
  • Click on PRINT
  • Repeat the above for every page you want printed.

Thank you.

Marie High, Editor

Flotilla Commander's Message

A welcome to Betty Shaneyfelt our newest member. Betty is the wife of Fred Shaneyfelt and both are very active members. This has already become a banner year for quality new members and a lot of work for Paul and Jerry Hopfengardner.

Welcome aboard Bette! Well done Paul and Jerry!

Flotilla 8-6 gave a strong performance at the April Division meeting. This is the meeting at which awards are given for the previous year’s performance. Our Flotilla was selected as the “Best in the Division” with “Most reported hours” and the “Best Flotilla Commander”. Congratulations Lou!

The following Staff Officers received an Award of Merit for service in 2004, Ed Stebner, 3 for Judi Bidwick, Jim Sleichert, Patrick Wheeler, Paul Corcoran, Bud Beeman, Al Bidwick, and Juan Hernandez. Harry and Ruth Bruno received an award of Merit for Most Valuable Flotilla Member. Congratulations and well done!

This months meeting is a Fellowship meeting and I hope it becomes a tradition. It’s at a time when we need a break after the hectic winter season and it’s an opportunity to say Good By to our members going back north for the summer. It’s also a time to meet and greet our new members.

We expect to start work on our Central AC soon so don’t be surprised if you’re asked to help with the installation. Part of the deal is that we also install AC at the Moorings as well and that means additional help will be needed. As you all know, the best part of the deal is no expense to the Flotilla.

Special thanks to those who made our recent QE mission such a success. Ed Stebner completed his first phase of becoming a QE with a Tow and SAR exercise last week. As expected, things went well and the mission was accomplished.

One final reminder. The hot summer is approaching and we need to be mindful of our water consumption. The best advice I ever heard was to drink water before you become thirsty.

Vice Commander's Message
Judi Bidwick, VFC

Our flotilla has a lot to be thankful for-our dedicated members have again reached for the sky and achieved many Division 8 awards. This kind of achievement doesn't happen without a lot of directed leadership and work on the part of many members. We rejoice in our individual awards but we also know that our individual members make up the team that carries us toward the high goals that we set. Thanks to our capable officers for the leadership and a special debt of gratitude goes out to each member who gave time and effort to assist in achieving our goals for the year.

MAY 21-27…National Safe Boating Week is coming! Let's get out and get some publicity for one of our most important Auxiliary efforts-safe boating. This is an especially important time for our vessel examiners and boat safety program visitors to get materials out to the many stores and parks in our area. We want to highlight the need for boating safety checks and, again, the need to wear life jackets while boating. If you can assist Dan Sansiveri in delivering materials to any store that sells boating supplies (including Walmart, Home Depot, etc.) please call and offer to do so. If you are a vessel examiner, please offer to visit boat ramps or see your neighbors to give safety checks. As boating season gets into full swing for Florida residents, this is the time to echo the U.S. Coast Guard's national "YOU'RE IN COMMAND" INITIATIVE-BOAT SMART; BOAT SAFE; WEAR IT!

Please join us at our fellowship picnic and celebration meeting on Tuesday at 1800. Family members are invited to share this afternoon.

A special thanks to all of you for your thoughts and good wishes for our Public Affairs Officer, Al Bidwick, who was hospitalized recently.

Career Counselor
Jerry Hopfengardner, FSO-CC

Dear 8-6 Shipmates:

Your appreciation of what the Coast Guard has to offer is demonstrated by your Auxiliary commitments! However, do you share this excitement with younger generations who are potential future Coasties? We should remind ourselves that appreciation and excitement modeled by a family member, friend, or neighbor conveys a very powerful and credible message. Please consider telling a young person about the advantages of a single hitch, or career in the USCG.

The following are but a sample of the options available:

  • Academy (leading to a degree and Regular Commission)
  • Commission following graduation from certain civilian collegiate programs.
  • OCS for Coast Guard enlisted
  • Enlistment in the regular CG
  • And enlistment in the Reserve.
Please pass on the good word – and either request specific information from me or encourage the interested young woman or man to give me a call.

This is not only all about the future of out USCG, but about America!

MENTOR PROGRAM

The honeymoon is over for our Mentor Program. It’s been four months since FC Keyes launched what he characterized as “Our #1 priority for this Watch Year” – and it’s great to announce that the program is on-course! We’re fortunate to have a charter cadre of competent and motivated Mentors paired with 14 Mentees, who are well integrated into the total life of 8-6.

It’s my privilege to recognize our charter cadre of Mentors: Bud Beeman, Al Bidwick, Judi Bidwick, Harry Bruno, Ruthanne Bruno, Bill Cabana, Bob High, Lou Magyar, Mike Marmion, and Jim Sleichert. With the Flotilla’s recruiting momentum, spearheaded by PS Paul Corcoran, we undoubtedly will be needing additional Mentors in the near future. If you haven’t made this commitment, please consider helping a new member through those rough seas during the early stages of membership. What better contribution can one make to the future of our Flotilla!

All it takes is a phone call for me to pencil in your name as a future Mentor!

Semper Paratus!

Greetings:

Here is a summary of items for April to supplement the information in my Flotilla emails:

  1. The Basic Computer workshop has been completed and was quite successful. We are looking into holding another session in the near future at a more convenient time, possibly in the evening. Member input is requested as to what would be a convenient time for you. Email me with your suggestions.

  2. In the works is a computer workshop geared to new members as an introduction to electronic communications related to flotilla functions.

  3. Work was completed on the inaugural issue of the Fore and Aft newsletter. It can be viewed on the flotilla website by going to the
Main Menu>Other>Newsletters>April or by clicking here.

Respectfully submitted.

Team,

April has been an active month for our new members. They are quickly becoming acquainted with crew qualification requirements through the different workshops and land tasks practice sessions that mentors and other members have been conducting recently. We are also enthusiastic about the fact that Ed Stebner completed the on-the-water tasks with flying colors and already participated in his first QE mission as a trainee. We thank everyone that contributed to this event and wish Ed the best in his new role.

We are looking forward to working with our new members throughout the summer and will be adding different sessions for advanced training to keep everybody busy and motivated during the summer.

Regards,

Juan C.Hernandez, FSO/MT

Nautical Mind Benders

1. Whether in a slip or on a mooring, it is good practice to always “_____” the boat in a proper fashion.
2. Cruising in an area where the variation is east, the compass course will usually be more or less than the true course.
3. The Intercostal Waterway (ICW) runs from Boston to _______ via a clearly marked channel with depths adequate to float 100-foot barges as well as the largest private vessels.
4. You notice that your boat’s sacrificial anodes are getting a corrosive-looking white scale on them… is this a good or bad thing? Anode life can be extended by cleaning them with a wire brush (up to three times) before replacing them.
5. To spin the boat (single engine) around smartly in tight quarters… apply hard _____ rudder just before reversing, to stop the boat’s forward motion.
6. Sailing “downwind” means your course is in a leeward direction and you are sailing on a “_____ reach”, “_____ reach”, or “______” with the wind.
7. Caution: Inshore charts typically show depths in ______ and offshore charts often show depths in ______ or ______.
8. In general, is it better to motor off a dock bow or stern first?
9. If you see a red light and a white light on an approaching vessel, it’s going to pass your starboard or port side-to.
10. Backing boat trailers can be made easier by the placement of your hand… on the _____ of the wheel for going ahead and on the _____ for backing up.

Answers:

1. Secure
2. Will usually be less.
3. Brownsville, TX
4. This is a good thing. (Corrosion is attacking the anodes instead of your engine.)
5. Hard right rudder (This will set the boat for the next maneuver.)
6. Beam reach, broad reach, running
7. Feet, fathoms or meters (A fathoms equals 6 feet.)
8. Stern first (Takes advantage of the curved bow, plus less draft… no motor at the bow.)
9. Port side-to
10. Top – for going ahead, bottom – for backing up

The Sharks Tooth Festival has come and gone, and Flotilla 8-6 was well represented thanks to our great volunteers. We got off to a shaky start when Jim Sleichert, Patrick Wheeler and I met at 0800 Friday morning to erect the tent and set up our displays. You can imagine our surprise when we discovered that our tent, which we purchased only last year, had been stolen. Not only did the thieves take the new tent, but they also took our two old ones also.

After checking on the possibility of renting a tent and finding none available, we decided to buy a new one. Sure, that will do it. We shouldn’t have any trouble with that plan. Right? Wrong! After checking Home Depot, Wal Mart, Sams, Target, etc. and finding no tents available, we were just about ready to throw in the towel, when Garland Russ came to our rescue. He located a great tent at BJs in Sarasota, drove up to the store, joined the club, purchased the tent, drove back and helped Jim, Patrick, and Judi set it up. What a great new member he is!

I want to thank everyone who gave up parts of their weekend to staff the booth and greet community members. Everyone worked at least a two hour shift and some stayed for four or more hours. In addition to those members who helped set up, I want to acknowledge the help given by Art and Patty Sperling, who with John Meyer opened the booth after sitting all morning in the Operations Workshop. They were relieved after two hours by Jim Sleichert and Judi Bidwick, who were later joined by Paul Corcoran and finished out the day around 1800.

Patrick Wheeler and John Dexter opened the booth at 1000 on Sunday and remained until noon when they were relieved by Harry and Ruth Bruno and Jerry Mitchell. Judi and Mike Marmion arrived around 1300 and remained until closing, when they helped Harry and Ruth disassemble the booth.

Everything considered, the weekend was well spent. We met a lot of people and distributed valuable literature, which should help people become safer on the water. In addition, we recorded over 50 names of people who showed an interest in taking one or more of our classes. Following the weekend, I created a database of their email addresses and sent them our schedule of classes for the coming year.

Vessel Examiner
Jim Sleichert, FSO-VE

Believe it or not, the year will soon be half over. We are moving along smoothly in our vessel inspection program, but could always use some more help. Our goal this year is 500 inspections, and we are only about 25% of the way there.

Our yearly inspections at Country Club Estates, South Bay, and Kings Gate are done. We will be doing the Venice Yacht Club on the 30th of April.

I'm working on getting some give away items for the inspections at the ramps. This may help in getting the boaters to take the time for an inspection. Our only problem is the usual, MONEY. But, I have a few ideas for getting these promotional items, and one is that maybe, we can find a sponsor to buy them, This idea is a long shot, but we may get lucky.

Any new member who wants to be a vessel examiner is welcome. The test is on line and open book. Don't make the mistake and think that the test is easy, it is not. One of our newest member, Fred Shaneyfelt, has passed the on-line and is ready to start inspections in the near future. We also have a qualified examiner, Henry Reynolds, transferring from flotilla 84(Sarasota) and should be a big help.

The summer is usually slower for inspections, but I hope that we will be able to maintain a visibility at the boat ramps and marinas.

I would like to wish all members going back North a safe trip and fun filled summer, We will be waiting for your return and the help you give us.
