April, 2005                                                Introduction

Welcome!!

It gives us great pleasure to present to you the online issue of the Fore And Aft Newsletter. It is hoped that you will enjoy the new format. It provides a number of new benefits, the greatest of which is the ability to see larger pictures in color and to be able to print them out for your use.

Other benefits include the ability to use hyperlinks within the text along with a larger number and size of photos. And, of course, the flotilla is able to realize $$$ savings on printing and mailing costs.

Should you wish to print out any page while viewing it in your browser, all you need do is one of the following:

  • Turn on your printer.
  • Be sure to change your monitor resolution to 800 x 600 as follows:
START>CONTROL PANEL>DISPLAY>SETTINGS>SCREEN RESOLUTION then close out the windows to get back to the page you want to print out.
  • You then need to highlight all or part of a page you want printed.
  • In the browser, do not use the icon that shows a printer. Instead, go to the top toolbar to where it says FILE. From the window that comes up, select SELECTION in the PRINT RANGE BOX.
  • Click on PRINT
  • Repeat the above for every page you want printed.

Thank you.

Marie High, Editor

Flotilla Commander's Message

First let me welcome our newest members Ronald Roth, Russ Garland, Fred Shaneyfelt and Carol Sweeney. Mentors are being selected and will be announced at the April meeting. Please make every effort to introduce yourself to our new members.

Division Captain Harry Eschedor will be our Guest Speaker this month. Harry will also present AUXOP awards to Juan Hernandez, Bill Cabana, and Bob Chapman. Congratulations to our new AUXOPs who have been waiting quite a while for their awards.  Feel free to ask Harry any questions you might have about Division/District plans or policies. Division Captains make scheduled visits to Flotilla meetings to meet with members and answer any questions and concerns.

I’ve been told the Fore and Aft goes on the Website this month, so you may be reading this on your computer. If so, we’d like to get feedback, either positive or negative.

The Division meeting is this Saturday April 9th at 0900. The location is Flotilla 8-4 in Sarasota next to the 10th Street Ramp. All are invited to attend.  Next month we hope to have a fellowship meeting as many of our winter members start their way home. With any luck we may have an air conditioned building fueled by central AC. Hopefully by meeting time we’ll have some definite news for you.

The winter Public Education program has ended and I thank those who came to class virtually every night. The PE program not only educates the public but is also our source for new members.

And finally, we’ll have a moment of silence for Bob Harris who passed away this month. Bob had been ill for quite a while and his passing was somewhat of a blessing for his family. In case anyone is unaware, Bob was a past Flotilla Commander and Division Vice Captain.  I remember being on Bob’s boat when I was training for crew and coxswain. I was there when the Betty Lynn was towed for the last time by Walt Jennings and I was on the Evelyn on virtually its first patrol. As Bob’s wife said, “Bob loved the Coast Guard Auxiliary”

Vice Commander's Message
Judi Bidwick, VFC

One of our main missions in the Auxiliary is Public Education. We continue to offer a well-balanced program to our public. The response to our classes has been consistently positive and accolades are extended to our instructors not only from our leadership but from the class members, themselves.

As a result of the hard work of our assistants, the “flavor” of our classes has been supportive, light-hearted, and informative. This was noted over and over again by members of our classes and they often commented about the rapport among our Auxiliary members and how they all seemed to have fun doing their work. This is precisely the kind of image our flotilla wants to convey to the public. We work very hard but we do have fun.

Our crew and coxswain training—in the classroom and on the water—provide excellent role models for those just entering our ranks or for those members who may not be able to meet weekly. Mentors are the one necessary contact that all new Auxiliarists need in order to feel comfortable learning the ropes. Many of you, as longtime flotilla members, have the skills needed to be mentors. Please let Denis or me know if you can see yourself assisting our new members if only for a short time.

The Public Affairs officer has done an excellent job sharing our flotilla’s missions with the public. The media coverage over the last two years has been exemplary and we thank Al for his diligent work in contacting the local and statewide media. The upcoming Venice Shark’s Tooth Festival gives all of us a chance to meet the public in a positive way. Please take an hour or two from your schedules to volunteer at the Auxiliary booth on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10.

Walt Jennings organized and led 8 boats on a fellowship trip to T’ween Waters Resort on Captiva Island. Twenty-two members enjoyed the weekend overnight, especially all the delicious food on the way down at the Fishery, the Bubble Room on Captiva, and the stop home on Cabbage Key. Walt prepared a great happy hour that allowed us to rendezvous and enjoy still more fellowship. Walt is planning another trip soon with the hopes of getting more people involved.

I’d like to encourage those of you who haven’t achieved your AUXOP to get motivated and take the required courses. These six courses will make you a well-rounded auxiliarist, having achieved what the Coast Guard calls their “PhD Program.”

Please plan to attend the Division 8 picnic at Station Cortez on Saturday, April 23. The station goes “all out” for these get togethers and it’s a good time to not only enjoy good food and fellowship but to meet the Coasties at the station.

I’d like to thank our northern visitors—Dale and Pat Myers, Diana and Joseph Floyd, and Tom Norton for sharing their expertise with us over the past three months. Not only did they train with us but they provided an invaluable service to the Public Education Program.

MENTOR PROGRAM PROGRESS

Two noteworthy Mentor Program initiatives are up on plane – and promise great futures:

8-6’s talented and accommodating FSO/CS, Bill Cabana, has developed a comprehensive New Member Orientation Power Point presentation on the Flotilla Website. It anticipates information new members need to navigate CGAUX waters. By all means, please look over Bill’s project-in-progress, give him suggestions for additional info to incorporate – and alert your Mentee(s) to it! Thanks, Bill, for this great contribution!

Our Mentor Program is on-course and picking-up momentum – thanks to the dedicated leadership of the following eight Mentors who have consented to serve 15 Mentees: Bud Beeman, Al Bidwick, Judi Bidwick, Harry Bruno, Ruth Bruno, Lou Magyar, Mike Marmion, and Jim Sleichert! If your name is not on the above listing, please give thought to stepping up and offering your 8-6 experience to a new member. I’m as close as the telephone or email.

Thank you, Denis and Judi for your vision and support!

Jerry Hopfengardner
Mentor Program Officer

MENTOR PROGRAM
Jerry Hopfengardener, FSO-CC

A very belated "Welcome Aboard!" I hope you find our Flotilla as welcoming and satisfying as I have found it. I too am a relatively new swab, having been sworn in this past October. FC Denis Keyes has identified our new Mentor Program as 8-6's Number One Initiative for this Watch Year. It's his goal to strive to help each new member find a niche in our program where she or he feels accepted and challenged to serve the USCG. I'm honored he appointed me to the position of Mentor Program Officer.

You have been matched with a veteran Flotilla member who volunteered to be your Mentor. This person is willing and able to support you through any rough waters you might encounter during the first few months of membership - plus provide valuable information and sage advice regarding the "who, what, when and where - and how" of becoming a fully-functioning Auxiliarist.

Please make certain you stay in regular contact with your Mentor, who will be advising you about meetings, uniforms to wear, courses, and of information for Mentees. Please never hesitate to seek advice and information that will ensure you being involved in the Flotilla activities that are most appropriate for YOU. And of course, don't hesitate to contact me if you feel I can assist in any way.

The following is a potpourri of reminders and announcements I hope you find pertinent:

  • You should have received copies of the Flotilla 8-6 membership roster and the excellent New Member Orientation CD produced by our webmaster Bill Cabana, FSO/CS. Both contain essential information. If you have not received copies, contact your Mentor or me ASAP.

  • We rely almost exclusively on the internet for communications among Flotilla members. If you are experiencing difficulty accessing our website or are not receiving routine emails from officers, please call Bill Cabana NOW at the phone number listed in the roster or email him at: fso-cs@cgauxvenice.org.

  • Our Flotilla Member Training Officer, Juan Hernandez, reminds us that all new members must attend the TEAM COORDINATION TRAINING program scheduled for Saturday, 16 April (0830, Mote Marine, Keating Building, Long Boat Key). All members should attend - even if you have not received your ID! Your Mentor should advise you regarding uniforms, etc.

  • Please contact your Mentor NOW regarding upcoming courses that might be appropriate for your interests/AUX goals.

  • I look forward to talking with you at our next Flotilla Meeting - 5 April, 1930, Training Center - 1200 South Harbor Drive.

  • I know you will find what I and virtually all other 8-6ers have experienced: Everyone strives to help each member be a valued crewmember on the "Good Ship 8-6!" Please never hesitate to ask questions - and please be willing to step forward to ensure we will continue to be the "Flagship Flotilla!"

    Jerry Hopfengardner
    Mentor Program Officer

Greetings:

Here are some of the things accomplished this month in addition to regular maintenance of the website and member communications:

  1. On March 16th at our Computer Workshop – Basics I, Juan Hernandez gave a presentation of the MT web pages on the website that was very informative and helpful. Recent new members Roger and Scotti Cordell and Fred Shaneyfelt were there to benefit from his presentation.

  2. Thanks go out to Chris Demos, Doug Simpson, Bob Schneider, Bud Beeman, Ed Stebner, UT (Uygur Gokbudak), Denis Keyes and Bob and Marie High, Arthur Gracz for generously donating computer equipment for use by the Computer Dept. Some of these will be used to replace the older and slower units we are now using in class. We are always looking for donations of outdated equipment.

  3. On the Members Resource Page under “Forms” was added the new D8 – Reimbursement Form.

  4. Work on the CG Auxiliary History site has been substantially completed and is now available for viewing at: http://www.auxpa.org/AUXHistory/

  5. The website calendar at http://my.calendars.net/fl86mt has been updated through April. Please be sure to check it periodically to keep abreast of flotilla activities.

The following is uniform guidance for the boat crews regarding the new ODUs.

 The D7 standard is...

Division 7 has set standards for uniforms in order to maintain a professional appearance in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is appropriate to mix the older dark blue uniform and the new ODU. However, there will be no mixing of colors, ie., light and dark blue shirts or long and short pants. The Order Issuing Authority may change these directions at any time. It is not the intention of the Coast Guard or Auxiliary leadership to cause financial hardship on any member by forcing them to purchase ODUs just to be part of a boat crew.

Team

Our Member Training (MT) activities in March included an interesting demonstration of PWC operations by Patrick Wheeler, which were part of the requirements to complete his currency check. Several new members started boat crew qualification training and are already riding along as observers during OWT exercises to learn and experience what is expected of crewmembers.

Finally, we appreciate the opportunity to support and share Ed Stebner's experiences as he goes through the process of qualifying for a QE rating. This is a unique and rewarding experience that will help us gain additional insights about Operations and performance standards for crewmembers and coxswains.

Bill Cabana and Juan Hernandez conducted another PC Skills workshop on March 16th. This session covered the features and resources available on the MT page of the Flotilla (http://www.cgauxvenice.org ). The next workshop is scheduled for April 6th.

Finally, we are delighted to announce that the staff at St. Cortez has agreed to conduct join-training sessions with us. These sessions will be held on Tuesdays, the first one is scheduled for April. More to come soon…stay tuned.

Regards,

Juan C. Hernandez,, FSO/MT

Although National Safe Boating Week is May 21st-27th, it is not too early to start talking about boat safety. Recent Coast Guard statistic reveal that there were 703 recreational boating fatalities on the water in 2003. Of those fatalities, 86% were not wearing their life jackets. Overall, fatal accident data show approximately 416 lives could have been saved last year if boaters had worn their life jackets.

As Auxiliary members, we have an obligation to the boating community to educate them on how to boat safely and to wear their life jackets so that these numbers can begin to steadily decline. By working together we can inform our communities that boating is a safe activity that can be enjoyed by all as long as it is done responsibly.

Once again, this year's theme is "Boat Smart. Boat Safe. Wear it!" We will continue to stress that message throughout the year and reinforce it at all of our public appearances. Our public education classes do an outstanding job in teaching people to boat safely and responsibly, as do our vessel examiners who ensure that boats are properly equipped to meet any emergency situation. Other members need to share in this responsibility. Safety is everyone's job.

I will soon contact members to help staff booths at community functions like the Home Depot Safety Celebration Day or the Sharks Tooth Festival. I will also need help in hanging posters in prominent places throughout the area and in performing a variety of safety related tasks. In the past, members have given generously of their time and talents, and hopefully their efforts have made an impact and perhaps have saved lives.

The two 13-lesson Boating Seamanship courses ended with 70 receiving certificates. The Coastal Navigation course is over halfway through. The final exam takes place on Wednesday, May 4.

A final date still has not been set for the GPS class. As soon as our instructor gives us a firm date, it will be announced. This class is not only for the public but our members will be able to enroll.

Thanks to our instructors and assistants who made our winter season a success:
Lou Magyar, Walt Jennings, Ed Stebner, Bud Beeman, Juan Hernandez, Ron Hogarth, Doug Simpson, Denis Keyes, Charlie Dulany, and Butch Brann. We could not have been as successful without our assistants Pat and Dale Myers, Diana and Joseph Floyd, Tom Norton, John Kandes, Jim Sleichert, Al Bidwick, Harry and Ruth Bruno, Al Paul, and Paul Corcoran.

To all new members who would like to become involved immediately-join the team of instructors and assistants who work with the Public Education Program. It's rewarding and you will do an important service not only for our flotilla but for the public, at large. We always have fun while working with the class members and you get to know other flotilla members.

If you are interested in becoming an instructor, please let me know so I can go over the requirements with you.

Attention:  Boaters

One of our members, Jack Sullivan, had a very serious problem recently while on a fishing trip on January 10th.  We're passing on Jack's experience to our VYC members with the hope that his experience may help other boaters.

Jack and Eric Rebild were twenty miles off the Venice Inlet, and when preparing to head home, they experienced no power due to dead batteries.  Before his power source went completely dead Jack called both the United States Coast Guard and Sea Tow for assistance.  They had a hand held portable GPS on board so they were able to inform the U.S. Coast Guard of their coordinates.

The Coast Guard out of Cortez arrived in the fog.  The fishing boat didn't show on the Coast Guard's radar until they were within one quarter of a mile off their bow.  Jack and Eric were extremely cold, wet from the fog and hungry.  The Coast Guard quickly provided warm jackets and blankets, and more importantly, the skill and care to hook up tow lines in seas rising 6-8 feet and dense fog.  They towed them back to Venice because they could not safely take them aboard the Coast Guard cutter due to the rough seas.  They arrived at the dock at 0400 hours January 11th, tired but secure in the knowledge that they had been reissued by a team of professionals of whom the Coast Guard and our nation can be proud.

The team led by Petty Officer Daes consisted of Petty Officer Cours and SN Borman.  Each man knew his job and executed it flawlessly.  Jack respectfully requested that a copy of his letter  of gratitude be placed in the personal file of each of those men who serve under BNG Jonathon Brown's command and accept his and his fishing partners gratitude for a job well done.  In addition to the rescue mission, the Coast Guard team kept in contact with their wives and assured them of their safety.

It took a week for them to determine the cause of the power failure of the two main batteries and the one back up battery.  All systems had been checked upon departure and everything seemed to be in order.  What they have now learned, is that some time during the past month, while the boat was on the lift receiving its normal shore power charge, lighting must have hit the boat or near by, causing the GFI switch to flip, closing the circuit to the boat's battery charger.  While all systems appeared normal on departure and all systems were running all day, there was not enough of a charge in the batteries to start the engines at the end of the day.

Note:  Makes one proud to be associated with the US Coast Guard.  Take note of the blankets and jackets the Coast Guard supplied.
