The Problem . . .
and a Challenge
The Problem
An increasing number of Americans are voicing anti-military
sentiments - and are prone to lumping the Coast Guard in with the
other Military Services (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines). This
impacts negatively on recruitment efforts by the Regular Coast
Guard, Reserve, Academy - and the Auxiliary. Many contend we
(collectively) are receiving unjustified public criticism resulting
in anti-military sentiments for two reasons: (1) many don't
understand the unique and multi-faceted mission of the Coast Guard;
and (2) are not aware that we are a member of the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security - not Department of Defense. These misperceptions
frequently result in both high school students, and their counselors
and parents having reduced knowledge of career options - which
ultimately translates to Coast Guard personnel reductions.
Our Challenge
We Auxiliarists can do much to reduce public negativism toward the
CG by merely explaining in layman's terminology the unique and
multi-faceted mission of the USCG (e.g., search and rescue, port
security, waterway environmental protection, drug and illegal
immigrant interdiction, and domestic security) - plus the reminder
that we serve under the Department of Homeland Security. This
approach can diffuse misconceptions, expand career option
perceptions for our talented young people, and enhance enlistments.
The USCG has earned a rich 215 year history of rendering
unprecedented service to our Nation. And, who is in a better
position to convey this good news than we who know and are committed
to her philosophy and mission!
Individually we can make a difference!
