New Member Tips

As a recent new member, I can recall the confusion I had knowing where to start, what to do and how to go about doing it. Knowing the questions I had and the effort expended in finding out how to proceed, I am presenting this page to help guide you and to help you orient yourself in the Auxiliary. After participating for awhile, some of you will probably take paths other than mine but by then you will be far enough along to find your own answers.

After being sworn in, one of the first things you will want to do is to is attire yourself in the appropriate uniforms you will need for meetings, on the water training (OWT), patrols, search and rescue, etc. The best person to help you with this is the FSO-Personnel Services. See the officer's page for the name of the current office holder.

One of the first activities that I would recommend is to start your training for Boat Crew. This will be a good basis for most of the other Auxiliary activities with which you will get involved. As a pre-requisite, you will need to take the Boating Safety and Seamanship Course. Check the course schedule for a convenient time or contact the FSO-Public Education. After that, you will be ready to participate in OWT and patrols.

You will need to obtain your Boat Crew Training materials from the FSO-Member Training. Next, you will need to receive guidance through the training from a mentor. Either the Flotilla Vice Commander or FSO-Member Training can help with getting one assigned to you.

Then you will be ready to start your OWT training. These are normally held at the Moorings every Tuesday at 0830. Any member can direct you to the Moorings. Check the patrol schedules for the OWT. The webmaster can give you this information. Be sure to volunteer for the patrols. These patrols will help give you practical experience in your training.

When you start attending meetings, studying, training, classes, patrols and other activities, you need to keep track of the time you spend in any of the activities. You can do this by filling out the 7029 - Member Activity Form found on the Member's Resouce page under "Forms." The FSO-Information Services can assist you with any questions regarding the form.
