OWT Mentoring Program

  I.              OBJECTIVE

                Provide Crew and Coxswain trainees with consistent mentoring by qualified and experienced coxswains and crewmembers during On the Water Training (OWT). Mentoring may be provided in the future for those seeking AUXOP and/or Qualification Examiner (QE) status.

II.            ROLE OF MENTORS:

                Mentors are responsible for helping assigned trainees, (one to three per OWT qualification period), to become fully qualified to perform all tasks required of a crewmember and/or coxswain.  In this capacity, Mentors will:

  • Actively participate in OWT activities on a regular basis;

  • Advise and guide Trainees throughout the crewmember and/or coxswain qualification process;

  • Coach Trainees on the performance of tasks;

  • Monitor Trainees’ performance and suggest ways to improve it, as required;

  • Evaluate Trainees’ proficiency and signoff tasks that have been successfully accomplished during several practice sessions;

  • Act as a liaison with MT and Operations Staff Officers to address development and performance needs of Trainees.

            Mentors must consult with Coxswains after completing OWT exercises to determine what tasks may be signed off.  In every case, Coxswains must confirm that Trainees have successfully performed the tasks to be signed during several training sessions.  Coxswains may also sign off tasks as the de facto mentor if the assigned Mentor is not available.

             Mentor’s primary objective is to ensure that his Trainee enjoys rapid success in the program, so that he or she will look forward to being an active, productive, skilled crewmember or coxswain after completion of training.

MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A desire to help fellow members achieve desired qualifications.

  • Good “people/teamwork skills”, i.e., the ability to exercise effective leadership, adaptability and flexibility, decision-making and communication skills.

  • In-depth knowledge in a specialty and/or qualification area.  Coxswain rating preferred but not required.

  III.          CREWMEMBER TRAINEE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Active members in good standing that are interested in becoming qualified as crewmembers will be assigned a Mentor.

  • Successful completion of AUXSEA (Seamanship) training before actual training on the water.  The AUXPAT (Patrols) course should also be completed while taking OWT for crewmember qualification.

  • Ownership of a vessel is NOT a requirement.

IV.         COXSWAIN TRAINEE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Qualified crewmembers in good standing that completed 28 hours as crew and are interested in becoming qualified as Coxswains will be assigned a Mentor.

  • Successful completion of AUXSEA (Seamanship), AUXPAT (Patrols) and AUXSAR (Search and Rescue) before the end of OWT.  Completion of  AUXACN (Advanced Coastal Navigation) is highly recommended while taking OWT for coxswain qualification.

  • Ownership of a vessel is NOT a requirement.
