The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) Checklist

The following is a list of the items that will be checked by your Auxiliary Vessel Examiner.

 The Federal Requirements Pamphlet explains each item and is available by following this link.

Numbering

 (CF numbers properly spaced, contrasting color, minimum 3" block letters)

(papers must be on board)

(must operate and show proper configuration)

Sound Producing Device

(horn, whistle, or other device)

(boats 20 meters or 65 ft and longer)

Life Jackets

(one wearable for each passenger, minimum two)

TYPE IV - Throwable Device
These are designed to be thrown to a person in the water. Throwable devices include boat cushions, ring buoys, and horseshoe buoys. They are not designed to be worn and must be supplemented by a wearable PFD. It is important to keep these devices immediately available for emergencies, and they should not be used for small children, non-swimmers, or unconscious people. They must be USCG Approved.

(mounted, minimum number for the size/type of boat)

Visual Distress Signals

(inland- flag, signal light, etc.) 
(coastal- flares, aerial rockets, not expired)

Ventilation

(installed blower must work, warnings posted.)

Backfire Flame Arrester

(approved type, tight installation, clean)

Fuel System

(tanks secure, 7+ gal vented and grounded, hoses in good condition, no leaks)

Anchor and Anchor Line

(suitable for the boat and boating area)

Alternate Propulsion

(boats under 16 ft. paddle, oars, etc.)

Dewatering Device

(bilge pumps must work, manual bailer, bucket, etc.)

Overall Vessel Condition

(bilge and equipment clean, well maintained, not overloaded, no auto parts)

 

Electrical System

(batteries secure, terminals covered, proper fuses or circuit breakers)

Galley/Heating System

(secure system, proper tank installation, no flammable material)

State Requirements

(comply with all state safety requirements)

 

Marine Sanitation Device

(approved device, overboard discharge sealed)

Marpol Trash Placard

(boats 26ft and over, written plan for 40ft and over)

Pollution Placard

(boats 26ft and over, w/ machinery compartment)

Navigation Rules

(boats 12 meters or 39.4 ft and longer)

 


The following items are not a safety requirement for the VSC decal. 

These are additional Federal Requirements that may be required on your boat. Your Vessel Examiner will check these items to assist you in determining if your vessel is in compliance

 

CG Capacity Plate

( must be visible, monohull power boats, under 20 ft.)

Certificate of Compliance 

(power boats under 20 ft., manufactured after 10/31/72)

Hull Identification Number 

(all boats manufactured after 10/31/72)

FCC Marine Radio License

(radar, EPIRB, etc., Also required for foreign travel)
